I was in Melbourne recently and took the opportunity to go and watch a game of Aussie Rules football at Etihad Stadium. The stadium was only a short walk from where we were staying and even though it was raining and I had a reluctant wife in tow I had a good night out. The rain didn’t matter because they closed the roof. As for the reluctant wife… well, my credit card’s only just recovered from a post game battering....
Read MoreHere’s a guest post, prepared by Isabelle Riley from Aussie Indoor Sports. This article gives a brief history of Futsal in Australia, along with a gentle nudge to potential players in New Zealand. It’s timely, given the huge push NZ Football is currently giving to Futsal and the strong uptake for the sport here, particularly in schools. Indoor soccer, or Futsal as it is commonly known, has been growing in popularity over...
Read MoreIt’s hard to know what to write about yesterday’s Ngaruawahia United versus Forrest Hill Milford NRFL Division 1 match. It was a frustrating watch, both for a neutral like myself and, I’m sure, the home fans. It’s fair to say the way the match played out pretty much wasn’t what I had hoped for. I arrived at Centennial Park wanting to see goals. And it started so promisingly for Ngaruawahia as well....

Read MoreI covered a few miles yesterday and didn’t always get to where I wanted to go when I wanted to get there. But it all worked out okay in the end. After finishing up with my mini-kickers group in the morning it was time to hop in the Matamata Bus and head to Auckland. Whangaparaoa, actually. After a quick stop to unload the family, clothes, bikes and dog I shot back down the motorway, knowing I was going to miss the kick-off at my...
Read MoreThere wasn’t too much on offer around the Waikato Bay of Plenty region this weekend, with all the top local NRFL sides in Chatham Cup action up in Auckland (I’m not scheduled to head back up that way until next weekend). So I decided to trick my family into heading to the beach for the afternoon…with a stand-out ulterior motive – popping in ‘quickly’ for a look at Tauranga reserves versus Matamata...
Read MoreGuest Blog – by Corey Rosser. They exist in our offices, supermarkets and almost anywhere else that involves large groups of people. From ‘dumb blondes’ to ‘white boys who can’t jump’ stereotypes are present in abundance, whether you like them or not. Football is not exempt from this rule, stereotypical characters live in its ranks from the professional level right down to social teams. You will...
Read MoreIt’s taken me a little bit to get going with this week’s offering. There’s just not that much of note to talk about from the Waikato derby of the United’s at Gower Park. But I’ll give it a go, if for no other reason than I need some words to stick this week’s photos under. I really like the set up at Melville. Over the years they’ve turned Gower Park into a nice little boutique football ground...
Read MoreIf you run a search in Google Images for ‘football+pantomime+villain’ you’ll find photos of Luis Suarez, Mario Ballotelli, Diego Maradona and even Robbie Savage, among others. If you added ‘+Tauranga’ to your search you should really come up with a photo of Dave Cook (you don’t, but that’s probably because there just aren’t too many images of the man on the web). Cookie is the man...
