A tale of two reds

A tale of two reds

Today was a typically mucky mid-autumn Hamilton day and a quirk in the draw meant I had the opportunity to watch the city’s two teams that play in red. It was certainly an afternoon of contrasts. On the one hand, I saw Stevie Williams’ Melville United dispense pretty comfortably of their visitors from Whangarei. Later in the afternoon I caught up with NRFL new boys, Claudelands Rovers, and saw them bow down to divison 2...

Every time I visit a match I’ll take a minute long movie so readers can get a feel for the venue. In the latest in our One Minute At… series we’re at Ngongotaha AFC’s Stembridge Road ground for their WaiBOP Federation League Division 1 match against Matamata Swifts played on April 20, 2013. The game finished 2-1 to Ngongotaha. Here’s a match report of the game.

Ngongie, Ngongie, Ngongie…

It seems that everytime I visit Stembridge Road in Ngongotaha it’s raining. Wet, grey, miserable, cold. I’m guessing this isn’t a constant condition, so it must be me. Ngongotaha is a village on the edge of Rotorua. It’s just down the road from the Agrodome, which is ironic, given the state of the pitch their match against Matamata was played on. As the mower was clearly broken someone from Ngongie could,...

Guest Post by Grant Stantiall I read a good article regarding electronic media and how it fits in with NZ football through a bloggers viewpoint. Enzo Giordani’s In The Back Of The Net website/blog is now one of my first reference points on NZ football. He mentions others that I also look at, and these sites are rapidly pushing mainstream media coverage off my radar. Take for example todays Sunday Star-Times football article by...

North Shore United fans are in for an exciting season. Going on the evidence provided by their 3-3 draw at home against Mt Albert Ponsonby, Shore fans will see goals the season. Lots and lots of goals. And they’ll be at both ends. With the likes of Jaryd Gray, Chris Bryson, Hector the Spaniard, the big Irish lad and an attack-minded midfield they won’t be found wanting in the Goals For column. Some of their football is...

One of the bonuses about being a blogger is that you’re not beholden to those pesky deadline thingies that are the curse of a journo’s life. That means I can post this article now and I’m still relevant… (hopefully). Excuses out of the way, I’m glad I made it across to Michaels Ave for Ellerslie’s match against Manurewa. This was a competitive game, even though Ellerslie scored inside the first 90...
